Top 5 Reasons Bus Travel is Better Than Flying

December 15, 2015

So you’ve decided to go on a trip. Your excitement builds and you daydream about all of the fun things you’ll do when you get there. But HOW will you get there? Just book an airplane ticket, right? Not so fast. The decision isn’t as cut and dry as you might think. Delayed flights, cramped seating and congested airports are a few reasons you may want to consider other options. Allow us to present the top 5 reasons why traveling by bus is better than flying.

Drumroll please...

1) Price

According to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, in 2015 the average price of a domestic flight in the United States is $388.32. Keep in mind this does NOT include baggage fees and other miscellaneous charges that seem to sneak up on you when booking air travel. Additionally, in order to get the cheapest airfare, you generally need to purchase your ticket well in advance of your departure date. Wait too long to book your flight and you run the risk of a much heftier price.

The good news for you is there are cheaper options for traveling. Enter: motor coach buses. According to BusRates.com, the average cost of a motor coach bus trip is $960 per day or $570 for a 5 hour trip. You may be thinking, “Wait a minute, that’s more expensive than flying.” Not to worry. Motor coach buses commonly seat between 47 and 57 passengers, which brings that cost to roughly $20 per person each day. Sounds better than that airplane ticket, doesn’t it?

2) Convenience

If your destination is a small town, odds are there won’t be a major airport in the vicinity. Traveling to Warroad, Minnesota or Dayville, Oregon? Good luck finding a direct flight. If you insist on flying, often times your only option is to fly into the nearest major city, book a connecting flight to a smaller airport, rent a car and then drive to your final destination. Alternatively, can you guess which method of transportation can get you directly into those small towns? If you guessed a motor coach bus, you would be correct, my friend.

3) Save Time

Let's not even talk about the hassle of actually getting to the airport and making your way through security. Okay nevermind, let's talk about it. The general rule of thumb is to arrive at the airport at least 75 minutes prior to your departure. When you tack on the time it takes to drive, take a taxi or hitch a ride from a friend to the airport, you're looking at an additional 2 to 2.5 hours on top of your actual flight time. And that's only if your flight doesn't get delayed. For shorter trips, taking a bus is a sure way to eliminate all of that extra time and hassle that goes hand-in-hand with an airport.

4) Comfort

If you've ever taken a commercial flight at some point in your life, chances are “cozy” isn’t the word you would use to describe your seating arrangement. Once you squeeze into your seat on an airplane, you're left fending for precious elbow space. Need to stretch out your legs? Forget about it. On the flip side, take a trip on a motor coach bus and you'll find bigger seats, more room for your legs, and less time worrying about being jabbed by a stray elbow from your neighbor.

5) Scenery

Rounding out the top 5 reasons that motor coach travel is better than flying: the scenery. Sure, on an airplane you might fly over Niagara Falls or the Rocky Mountains and happen to catch a quick glimpse. But what if it's cloudy? The pilot announces over the intercom that you're flying over the Grand Canyon, so you quickly look out the window to try to get a peek, only to find a sea of puffy, white clouds obstructing your view. When you travel by bus, you'll drive through or near these popular landmarks for some spectacular views. Don't forget to bring your camera!

Final Thoughts

Of course flying might be necessary in certain situations, such as business trips. However, make sure to explore your options when booking your travel. In many cases, traveling via bus can provide you with a more comfortable and cost-effective experience than dealing with the stress that a crowded airport and delayed flight may cause you. Safe travels!
