Solving the School Bus Driver Shortage

school bus driver shortage

“The wheels on the bus go round and round, round and round, round and round.” Ask any school bus driver out there and they’ll probably tell you they’ve heard kids sing that oh-so-catchy tune more times than they can count. However, the sad reality is there aren’t enough school bus drivers around these days to hear it. Unless you’re up on your transportation news, you may not be aware of the school bus driver shortage currently facing the industry. For that reason, we want to shed some light on the topic, as well as show why it's such a rewarding job.

We’re not afraid to say it. Our industry is facing a shortage of school bus drivers. And this isn’t just a local district issue. It’s not even just a state issue. The driver shortage extends across the entire United States. According to a survey conducted by School Bus Fleet magazine in 2015, only 6% of school bus contractors said they had no shortage of drivers. The fact that 94% of the respondents noted at least some degree of a shortage -- whether it be mild, moderate, severe, or desperate -- is a glaring number. And we want to help fix that.

Becoming a school bus driver is perfect for people who enjoy being a role model for today's youth, whether they be a recent college grad, a retiree looking for a part-time job, or even someone who is self-employed and looking for some extra income. Additionally, some of the benefits include having your summers and holidays off, as well as the availability for extra work if desired. And let's not forget about the best benefit of all: the opportunity to inspire someone to follow in your footsteps.

The school bus drivers that we know are some of the hardest working, nicest and most professional individuals you will ever meet. Additionally, being a school bus driver is one of the most rewarding jobs out there. Drivers are the first people to greet your kids in the morning on their way to school and the ones to ensure they make it home safely in the afternoons. Having that daily interaction and building those connections can go a long way in helping to mold our youth. Just ask Mrs. B.

The school bus driver shortage is bigger than just our school district or the state of Minnesota, and that's why we're hoping to make a difference. If this inspires just one person anywhere to become a bus driver, that would make us happy. If school transportation sounds like a rewarding career for you or someone you know, please don't hesitate to pursue it. We need more people like you.
